Tilak, Narayan Vaman

Tilak, Narayan Vaman
(c. 1862–1919)
   Poet and Order Founder.
Tilak was born into a high-caste Hindu family in Ratnagiri, India. He was converted to Christianity as a young man – apparently after being given a New Testament by a stranger on a train, and he was baptised in 1895. Subsequently he joined the American Marathi mission and he was ordained in 1904. He is remembered as a poet; he produced a large number of Indian songs of praise and he started a life of Jesus Christ in verse. Two years before his death, he started his own community, the Baptised and Unbaptised Disciples of Christ, which was based in Satara.
